Encouraging young children to read is so important and my work with school’s & libraries has brought recognition on the BBC. The popularity of Scruff has demonstrated that there is more to Scruff than entertaining young children. The medium of Scruff can also be used for the greater good by getting youngsters and toddlers familiar with books and stories and thereby starting them on the road to reading and education.
Libraries and schools play such a large part in a young child’s development that we should take advantage of every opportunity we get to help them. My appearances at libraries and schools are intended to introduce young children to reading, to be educational and most of all to be fun. In the case of libraries, this may be the first time a child has been in a library.
The events take the form of reading the books while trying to encourage interaction with the children. We chat about who has a dog or a pet, or how many of them truthfully put their toys away after playing, the answers for which often contradict what Mum & Dad say. Events in schools try to compliment the curriculum and together with reading Scruff, the children are also given the opportunity to write their own story and get involved. That said, any Scruff event can be tailored to your needs and expectations.
Duration is about 45 minutes and the feedback I have had from schools is amazing with children being desperate to write a story or read more following the event.

“What a wonderful experience for our key stage one children to have the amazing author Giles Trigg. He was so inspirational and the children loved listening to his stories. He got them involved and excited about story telling. A huge thank you for also signing your books that the children bought. We hope to see you again at Offmore Primary!”

“Just some feedback from today-
All the staff commented on how well you worked with the children and how they really engaged with your sessions. They loved having a book to take home too! The children have been buzzing about reading lots at home and creating stories which is what it was all about! “
